Recent statistics show that there are about 4.2 million children living in poverty-that is 600,000 more than in 2011/12. This means that just over 30% of children or nine students of every classroom of 30 students are classed as being poor.
Research shows that children from lower-income backgrounds typically show lower educational attainment compared to children from higher-income backgrounds and this gap seems to widen throughout the pupils childhood.
A vicious cycle
Young adults who suffer financial hardship as children have significantly higher chances of earning lower wages and being unemployed; earnings are estimated to be reduced between 15%-28% and the probability of being in employment at age 34 years reduce between 4%-7%.
Due to circumstances beyond the child’s control their future seems to be written for them. They have very little chance and very little choice of achieving their true goals and because of this, the vicious cycle continues through further generations.
